Thanks to Johannes Hoffart for pointing me to pgfplots started by Dr. Christian Feuersänger.
It lets you plot different diagram types nicely right within LaTeX. The diagram data can be in separate files (i.e. csv files) and the resulting figures can be exported to pdf.
